Summer Yard Care Checklist
While summer doesn’t officially start until June 20, we are already experiencing some nice summer weather, which means it is time to start summer yard care.
6 SUMMER YARD CARE TIPS
In between BBQs and trips to the cabin here are six things you need to do to keep your yard healthy”
1. WATER YOUR PLANTS
Higher temperatures mean your plants need more water than they have in the past month; newer plants need more water than established plants, too. Check out our guide to watering plants to ensure you plants are never thirsty.
2. CHECK ON YOUR MULCH
Mulch is a lifesaver for plants in Minnesota; it helps protect them against our extreme temperature swings. Check out our blog post on tree nutrition to learn how much mulch you need and how to properly lay it.
3. RAISE YOUR LAWN HEIGHT
When July comes, adjust the cutting height of your lawnmower from 1 inch to 1.5 inches. The taller grass shades the soil and protects against heat and drought.
4. MOW WITH CAUTION
Mowing a dry lawn stresses it and further increases the chance of it drying out. Wait to mow until it has rained or you have watered the lawn.

5. LOOK UP
How do your trees look? While pruning is easier when there are no leaves on the trees, it can still be done in the summer. Check out our blog post on how to prune things on your own and our post on how to identify tree risk; if there are big, hazardous branches or branches near cables, make sure to give our certified arborists a call.
6. PREPARE FOR STORMS
While we can’t prevent storms, we can prepare our yards to help them survive the summer storms. From planting to fertilizing, check out our blog post on getting your yard storm-ready.
Follow the summer yard care tips above and you will see your yard flourish this summer.
