Your Tree’s New Year’s Resolutions
As we turn the page on 2016, many of us are making New Year’s resolutions we vow to keep. From staying healthy to getting more organized, you may be surprised to realize that your common resolutions are very similar to what your trees are wanting in 2017.
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: GET ORGANIZED
Whether it’s organizing your schedule, finances or closet, the beginning of the year is a time for planning. As you prepare for 2017, make sure evaluating your landscape is on your to-do list. Take the time to determine your current landscape situation and the goals you have for your property. With your goals in mind, contact your local arborist to help create a fresh slate for your New Year’s plans. For example, your trees may need inspection to check for winter wear and tear like tree damage or disease. Also, consider expanding your landscape by planting new trees and plants.
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: GET HEALTHY
The classic New Year’s resolution usually involves maintaining good health and exercising more, coincidently our trees can relate. Trees need maintenance and nutrients that will prepare them for healthy growth throughout the year. To start the year off right, dormant pruning is needed to rid your trees of damaged branches and encourage new growth. Come spring time, remove fallen leaves, twigs and garbage from your yard. A great spring cleanup job leaves space for mulch, which will help retain moisture in your tree’s soil and control pesky weed growth.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: DE-STRESS
Most of us live pretty crazy, busy lifestyles so we can all benefit from any opportunity to lower stress – same goes for our trees. Before trees enter their peak growing season apply a slow-rerelease fertilizer to replace nutrients lost through the harsh winter. Additionally, the fertilizer will improve resistance from disease, insects and other stressful weather. For overly stressed trees, cabling and bracing may be needed to reduce strain from high winds or heavy snow.
